Torbay Council activate Severe Weather Emergency Provision for rough sleepers

Torbay Council has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Provision (SWEP) protocol for rough sleepers as temperatures are expected to fall well below freezing tonight.

SWEP protocol is only initiated in Torbay if there is a weather warning, or when the temperature is expected to hit well below zero.

Once SWEP is initiated additional accommodation is made quickly available to prevent harm and death due to the severe weather conditions.

In Torbay the SWEP provision is handled by the Leonard Stocks Centre. The communal areas allow for an additional 16 people to receive shelter from the harshest of weather conditions.

Anyone who is sleeping rough across Torbay will be able to access the cold weather provision. This includes pet owners, couples, individuals who’s needs might be a little more complex and those who have no resource to public funds.

In Torbay there are two centres that are made open, these are the Leonard Stocks Centre in Torquay and the Gerston Chapel in Paignton. If you do spot someone who is homeless this evening please ensure you direct them to either one of these centres.

If you’re concerned about a rough sleeper the best way you can help is by reporting it to StreetLink at www.streetlink.org.uk.
