Torbay & South Devon NHS launch carers rights day

Do you look after a family member or friend who cannot manage alone, or have you supported someone during the pandemic? If so, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s Carers Service is running advice sessions for you on Carers Rights Day.

Torbay Carers Service is helping anyone who has been supporting a family member or friend unpaid and not for a voluntary organisation to find out more about the wide range of help and support available.

Carers Rights Day 2020 is taking place on Thursday 26 November, and carers are invited to join the Carers Service for a series of talks about their rights and the support available. The sessions can be joined via phone or computer and will be running all day, with the first starting at 11am and the final session on employment support beginning at 7pm.

The sessions cover a number of topics, from support in GP practices and advice on keeping healthy, to how carers can access technology and employment support.

Katy Heard, Carers and Volunteers Lead at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “From 1-to-1 emotional support to health and wellbeing checks, education courses and back-up planning, the support available to unpaid carers is vast. Examples include the Torbay Carers Card, which is a ‘passport’ for discounts, free hospital parking and other benefits.

“Carers play a crucial role in society and it is so important that they know support is available, with many people who support someone not realising that they are an unpaid carer.

“People who support someone should register their interest for the Carers Rights Day sessions in order to find out more about the support available to help them to continue to care for others.”

‘Carers Rights Day’ is a national campaign to help unpaid carers understand their rights; learn about what support is available to them and also how to access that support.

A full programme of sessions can be found on the Trust’s website:
