Torbay Apprenticeship Fair is Back, bigger and better!!

Torbay’s Apprenticeship Steering Group is delighted to announce the return of the Torbay Apprenticeships Fair on Wednesday 5 February 2020, as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

The free Torbay Apprenticeships Fair will take place at the Riviera International Conference Centre between 9:30am and 1pm, providing a space for employers, training providers and anyone wanting to learn about the amazing opportunities through apprenticeships.

Councillor Swithin Long, Torbay Council Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Tourism and Housing, said: “Apprenticeships offer a great way for our business community to grow; bringing in new skills or developing existing staff skills can yield dividend to a company’s bottom line. It’s also a great way for people in or out of work to develop their skills and their career. TDA is working with local partners to deliver this campaign during National Apprenticeship Week. Our aim is to bring communities, employers and training providers together.”

Rebecca Davies, Senior Economic Development Officer at TDA and Chair of the Apprenticeships Steering Group, said: “We are excited for the return of the Apprenticeships Fair to build on the success of last year’s campaign. Together, with partners, and through events like this we are sharing the value of apprenticeships and seeing more businesses in Torbay take on apprentices.

“During National Apprenticeship Week 2019 we reached over 1,000 people and in 2020 we will deliver a range of activities to engage with schools and businesses. By providing a new toolkit we are looking to engage with more employers during National Apprenticeship Week.

As part of the national ‘Fire It Up’ campaign on social media, local businesses and Torbay apprentices are gaining exposure, promoting the benefits and sharing inspiring stories. Local employers being recognised for their support of apprenticeships include EFFECT, TDA, Bishop Fleming, Cavanna Homes, Gooch & Housego, The Orange Tree and Torbay NHS Foundation Trust.

National Apprenticeship Week is 3-7 February 2020, and throughout the week activities will take place across Torbay to share the value of apprenticeships. In addition to the Apprenticeships Fair, the campaign includes the Torbay Business Forum Breakfast ‘Apprentice Takeover’, South Devon College Apprenticeship Awards, ‘Apprenticeships on Tour’, school assemblies and employer open days.

As part of the ‘Apprentice Takeover’, local employers are being asked to showcase their apprentice’s talents and skills during the week and share activity on social media.

Steve Reynolds, Chair of Torbay Business Forum, said: “The Apprentice Takeover is a fantastic opportunity for the apprentices to shine and for other businesses to see the value of young people learning new skills on the job, as well as developing skills of those in work with higher apprenticeships. Last year, all the South Devon College apprentices did themselves proud, delivering an exceptional event. We are excited to have the opportunity to do it all again for National Apprenticeship Week 2020.”

The Apprenticeship Steering Group partners are TDA, South Devon College, Devon & Cornwall Training Provider Network, Torbay Business Forum, Heart of the South West Careers Hub and the South West Apprenticeships Ambassador Network.
