Reading Well – Books on Prescription Supported by Torbay Libraries

Have yosmall_ReadingWell_bookpanel_BOPu heard about this new scheme for people with dementia and their carers?

Reading Well Books on Prescription is a fantastic new initiative to help people understand and manage health and well-being, and that of others, by using self-help reading.

The scheme has been endorsed by health professionals and supported by public libraries.

It’s great to see that Torbay libraries are supporting the launch of this scheme, which benefits people with dementia and their carers.

Executive Lead for Harbours, Culture and the Arts, Councillor Amil, said: “I am delighted that Reading Well Books on Prescription has been such an effective way to reach people with quality assured help and information. I am extremely pleased that Torbay Libraries will be supporting this valuable scheme.”

Books are available for anyone to borrow from the library, and recommendations can be made by GP’s and health professionals who can suggest titles and book lists.

A range of texts have been included in the list such as books offering advice about symptoms as well as how to live with, and make the most of life with, dementia. There are also personal accounts available of those who have the condition and books aimed at helping carers & families together with therapeutic activities and picture books.

A key priority of the Prime Minister’s Dementia Challenge is to prioritise services & quality of care, and the Reading Well Books on Prescription is a cost-effective way of delivering support at the heart of the community.

It is being recognised that dementia is becoming one of the most significant health issues of our time. which not only affects the person suffering, but also has a major impact on family and friends. It is hoped that the books will become a vital resource for anyone affected by the condition, or which there is still a deep lack of understanding.

It is also hoped to serve for people who are concerned about symptoms but have not been formally diagnosed.

Reading Well Books on Prescription for dementia is supported by Alzheimer’s Society, British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies, British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, The British Psychological Society, Carers UK, Dementia UK, Innovations in Dementia, National Association of Primary Care, NHS England (IAPT), Royal College of General Practitioners, Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
