The most popular baby names in Torbay have been revealed

The most popular baby names in Torbay have been revealed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

According to the ONS, Jack and Oliver were joint popular boys names in the county whilst Olivia was the most popular girls name.

1,339 newborns in 2017

Last year Torbay was home to 1,339 new babies which compromised of 661 baby boys and 678 baby girls.

Torbay followed the national trend with Olivia being the top name chosen for a girl in 2017.

Second most popular baby boy name in Torbay was Oliver followed by George in 3rd place.

For the girls Lilly was the second most popular name followed by Poppy in 3rd.

Nick Stripe, of the ONS said:

“Although Oliver and Olivia remained the most popular baby names in 2017, some fascinating changes took place beneath them.

Leo entered the boys’ top 10 for the first time, whilst Hunter rocketed into the top 100, also for the first time, reaching number 78.

Sarah, the most popular name for baby girls throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s, dropped out of the top 100 for the first time since our records began in 1904. Brand new entries into the top 100 for girls include the names Aurora and Hallie.”

Across England and Wales, royal references to Harry and George have continued to dominate baby names into 2017, both securing 2nd and 3rd place since 2016.

Amelia was the second most popular girls name across the country, knocking Isla down to third place.

New baby names introduced

Nearly 700,000 babies were born in England and Wales last year and over 63,000 new baby names were registered.

New entries to the top 100 baby names for the boys includes Hunter and Ralph.  Hunter for the first time and Ralph for the first since 1944.

In the most popular girls names category there were six new names introduced including Aurora, Orla, Edith, Bonnie, Lyla and Hallie.
