LIBRARIES TRANSFORM INTO MARKET PLACES

Libraries in Exeter, Paignton and Barnstaple are being turned into mini marketplaces throughout the year.

Libraries Unlimited, the charity that runs the 54 libraries across Devon and Torbay, is launching a new scheme to give sellers and small home-grown businesses the chance to rent Retail Carts in library buildings. Prices start from as little as £25 a day, and it’s hoped it will give sellers a cost-effective opportunity to showcase their products to local communities.

Rachel Payne, Business Development Manager from Libraries Unlimited said: “The pandemic was a challenge for everyone, and in common with many other towns and cities, Exeter, Paignton and Barnstaple, have seen High Street shops closing. With the Retail Cart scheme we’re offering retailers the chance to have a cost-effective physical presence once again at the heart of their communities.”

“Buying habits are changing, and we know that aside from shopping online, consumers love the novelty of a pop-up. Lots of people also started up businesses during lockdown and we want to help them grow to the next stage. All three libraries are in central locations with high foot-falls so they should be in a prime position to sell.”

The Retail Carts in the three libraries will be available throughout the year with day rates of just £25. A five day week’s rental is £100 and weekend rates are £55 in Exeter and £45 at Paignton and Barnstaple.

Every penny from cart rentals will go directly to Libraries Unlimited to support and enhance library services across 54 libraries in Devon and Torbay.

Rachel Payne added: “Libraries Unlimited is keen to roll out the Retail Carts to other libraries in the future, and we’re looking forward to welcoming as many local sellers and home-grown businesses as possible.
