Free maths and numeracy courses for adults in Torbay

Adults in Torbay who want to improve their maths and numeracy skills can now sign up for free courses thanks to a new government initiative.

Multiply is a government-funded programme aimed at adults who do not already have a GCSE grade C/4 or higher in Maths or an equivalent subject. It hopes to give people the skills they need to progress in their careers, secure well-paid jobs and improve their wellbeing.

The free courses are available to all adults aged 19 and above who live in Torbay, with courses available online and in-person in Brixham, Torquay and Paignton.

Torbay Council has successfully secured just over £600,000 from the government’s £2.6 billion UK Shared Prosperity Fund to deliver the Multiply Programme to people in Torbay. The programme is being managed by TDA and delivered in partnership with Eat that Frog, I Can Do That and South Devon College; a collaborative approach designed to reach as many local people as possible.

Councillor Swithin Long, Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Tourism and Housing for Torbay Council said: “We are delighted to be offering these maths and numeracy courses through the Multiply programme. They will help people across Torbay to use maths in their daily lives, at home and at work.

‘‘Whether you want to help your children with their homework, better manage your household finances or improve your numeracy skills in the workplace, these courses will help you to gain confidence and a greater understanding in maths – and they are completely free.’’

There are several courses available aimed at making people more confident with numbers, with opportunities to progress onto Functional Skills Qualifications or equivalent.
