We will be singing a very contemporary piece by Benjamin Britten, St Nicolas , and will be accompanied by an ensemble and tenor soloist, Nick Hawker. The Cantata tells story of St Nicolas, the saint who we celebrate as Santa Claus, Father Christmas or, as in the poem ‘The Night Before Christmas’, St Nick.
The life story of St Nicolas is set to music by Britten and describes the trials, tribulations and the miracle St Nicolas performed when he restored ‘The Pickled Boys’ to life. Our ‘Pickled Boys’ will be boy choristers from Exeter Cathedral.
We are also performing the lovely Bach Cantata No. 140, ‘Sleepers Awake” which will be very familiar to one and all. Our other soloists will be Elinor Chapman (Soprano) and Julian Rippon (Bass).
In addition Elinor will sing ‘Let the bright Seraphim’ from Handel’s Samson Oratorio and Julian will sing ‘Mighty Lord’ from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. All in all, it promises to be a wonderful evening of beautiful music and falls on the eve of ‘Stir Up Sunday’ to get you into the mood for advent and Christmas.
To round the evening off we will assemble in the Church Hall for a sociable evening and a Finger Buffet and we do hope you will join us. We look forward to meeting you after the concert.
